Shropshire Music Service is proud to celebrate ensemble student Hamish Byne as he begins his BMus Hons Music course at Goldsmiths. Although it is always bittersweet when students move on to university, it is inspiring to see their hard work and passion carry them forward.
Hamish, a percussionist with Shropshire Youth Orchestra, said; “The best thing about being in the Youth Orchestra is the support given by all the staff. They encouraged and helped me to become a better performer. I really enjoyed playing in Youth Orchestra and Stage and Screen Orchestra. Shropshire Music Service is a wonderful organisation to be part of.”
Before heading to London, Hamish also worked as an associate tutor with our Riffs workshops, supporting younger drummers.
Congratulations to Samuel, pictured centre, who has recently passed his Grade 4 cornet exam with distinction. A brilliant achievement.
Samuel is a proud member of our Ludlow Stompers group, where he plays alongside his brother Zac, shown here on piano. Their older brother Joel is also part of the Shropshire Music Service family as a keen drummer in our Rock and Pop project, Riffs.
It is wonderful to see all three brothers making music together. Our ensembles give families the chance to share music, learn together and enjoy performing as a team, both in rehearsals and at home.
At Severndale Specialist Academy, pupils are now making music in new ways thanks to Soundbeam.
A system donated by Shropshire Music Service. Soundbeam turns movement into sound, letting children create music through gestures. “It’s incredible to see pupils light up,” says Creativity Lead Sophie Canning. “
Shropshire Music Service has donated a Soundbeam class kit to Severndale Specialist Academy in Shrewsbury, giving young people with physical differences the chance to create music through movement.
We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of Claudia Savage, principal violinist in the World Folk Ensemble. Claudia first joined Shropshire Music Service in year 2 as a pupil at Woodfield Infant School in Shrewsbury.
It was a privilege for the World Folk Ensemble to perform one of Claudias’ original compositions in our Spring Term Concert. Her piece, “Coed Llennyrch”, is a modern interpretation of a Celtic Air and was received with real admiration from both performers and audience.
We wish Claudia every success as she begins her BA Music course at the University of Leeds.

Well done to Tildy, who has recently passed her Grade 1 saxophone with distinction. A fantastic achievement.
Tildy is a proud member of Shrewsbury Stompers, one of our beginner orchestras. Stompers welcomes students who can play as few as five notes through to those working towards Grade 2, making it a great place to grow skills and confidence. Tildy said: “I like Stompers because I get to play some of my favourite pieces with other children my age.”
We cannot wait to see where her musical journey leads next. Congratulations Tildy! Everyone at SMS is very proud of you.
