At Shropshire Music Service, we believe that every young person in our county should have the opportunity to experience the joy, challenge and reward of music-making, regardless of financial circumstances.
That’s why we provide clear bursary pathways to support pupils who may otherwise face barriers to accessing tuition, instruments or music opportunities.
Several bursary schemes are accessible to eligible young musicians in Shropshire.
These include:
The Rosalie Inskip Music Trust – supporting young musicians (up to age 24) based in the local area who demonstrate aptitude. Funds may contribute to instrument purchase, lessons or travel to enhance their musical progress.
The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust – aimed specifically at children aged 7-11 years whose families are on low incomes or in exceptional circumstances. Grants may partially fund school or private tuition. Information on how to apply is sent directly to your child’s school.
The Alan Surtees Trust – for young people (aged 16-30) working in or influenced by traditional music and arts. Support covers mentoring, rehearsal space, equipment and recording projects.
Other national awards include the Young Sounds and the Universal Music UK Sound Foundation, which accept applications for up to several thousand pounds for tuition, instruments or creative projects (subject to eligibility).
Bursaries are generally means-tested or linked to musical progress and commitment.
Applicants should live in Shropshire, be in full-time education and be actively engaged in music (whether lessons, ensembles or composition).
Schools, parents or the young person themselves may make the initial enquiry.
Supporting evidence is required, such as a teacher’s recommendation, financial details or outline of costs.
Each scheme has its own application process and deadlines.
For example, for the Jon Hayward Trust, applications received by early July are given priority for the forthcoming academic year.
Upon receipt, a board reviews the application on merit, taking into account musical ability, progress, motivation and need.
A successful award is not guaranteed and may not cover 100% of the costs.
