Creating a Buzz in Brass Teaching

The work of a Shropshire Music Service member of staff has been featured in a national case study on good practice in brass teaching. Joanne Giles, Whole-Class Team Co-ordinator at Shropshire Music Service has been recognised for her excellent work in beginner brass tuition by the company pBone Music, the team behind an award-winning range of instruments.

Joanne has devised a comprehensive 12-week program for whole class tuition, focusing on using pBuzz instruments as a precursor to brass. pBone Music have praised Joanne’s ‘perseverance and passion’ which has led to pBuzz being used across schools throughout Shropshire. Her work empowers students, building their confidence, and transforming their musical journeys.

Noting how accessible the instruments are, Joanne loves using pBuzz in the classroom because of its engaging design and practicality. Her approach has shown remarkable effectiveness, facilitating a smooth transition from the pBuzz to more traditional brass instruments. Joanne elaborates:

When I get a new group or class, I love taking the pBuzz in because they’re fun, and they’re accessible, and they get children to buzz. Schools have noticed the difference this makes in student progression: as children move onto more traditional brass instruments, their playing is far richer in sound.

pBone Music’s case study notes that through the work of Joanne, Shropshire is one area of the UK embracing the progressive pathway offered by pBuzz instruments, which is reaching students across the globe. Joanne’s work has been praised for illustrating ‘the power of pBuzz in transforming a student’s music journey and self-confidence.’ Shropshire Music Service is lucky to have Joanne’s expertise, enthusiasm and passion leading their team of whole class instrumental tutors.
